The industry’s got 99 security problems, and hiring will soon be number one

Chris Rothe

Steve Morgan recently published an article in Forbes titled Cybersecurity’s Labor Epidemic and did a great job compiling research on the looming cybersecurity talent shortage. Several of the most telling statistics and facts:

  • “The demand for the (cybersecurity) workforce is expected to rise to 6 million (globally) by 2019, with a projected shortfall of 1.5 million” stated Michael Brown, CEO at Symantec.
  • The “2015 PwC US State of Cybercrime Survey” asked whether organizations have the expertise to address cyber-risks associated with implementation of new technologies, only 26 percent said they have capable personnel on staff.
  • More than 209,000 cybersecurity jobs in the U.S. are unfilled, and postings are up 74 percent over the past five years, according to a Peninsula Press (a project of the Stanford University Journalism Program) analysis of numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

As Red Canary’s CEO, Brian Beyer, discussed in a recent Techcrunch piece, you have three options to build your security team: retain talent, hire new talent, or outsource.

When retaining and hiring new talent, the increasing demand for security talent will continue to drive salaries upward, giving great advantages to two types of organizations: those who can afford it and those who can do more with less – the most efficient security organizations.

That increasing cost of talent and the complexity of today’s security products is forcing many organizations to take a hard look at outsourcing. Before releasing that exasperated sigh and remembering the cobbled together technology, incompetent account management, and calls at 4am alerting you to a clear false positive, take hope – there is a new generation of companies providing security services that are worthy of your business.

Red Canary is proud to be the leader of that next generation focused on your endpoint security. Our service combines the great technology you want to acquire with the team of expert security analysts you want to hire – all costing you far less than building that organization yourself. Even better than the cost savings, your organization gets the benefit of deep shared intelligence based on Red Canary’s years of experience hunting and detecting threats on the endpoint.

We are excited to deliver a powerful alternative to companies looking to improve security and acquire talent in today’s market. Our customers range from regional hospitals and defense contractors up to the Fortune 500. They tell us Red Canary delivers market leading technology to detect and respond to threats with an expert team that focuses on the security of the organization so they can focus on their mission. This doesn’t mean you can outsource all of your security – understanding what to outsource and what questions to ask potential service providers is an extremely important step that we will highlight in a future post.

So take another look at outsourcing your endpoint security to the next generation of security services as you plan for filling security gaps in a world of ballooning salaries and talent shortages. Red Canary would be proud to bring you into the family of companies we’re defending.
